The Crew Goes Global: Year Two

This month we have launched our Postcrossing project.  This ongoing class activity involves writing and sending postcards all over the world.  Real postcards, with real stamps, traveling by snail mail. In our digital age of immediacy, this project both enlarges the globe and students' horizons as we look up countries the students are unfamiliar with, and place the incoming postcards on the wall around the world map. Students get practice writing for an authentic audience for an interesting reason.

Eight postcards have already arrived!

Minsk, Belarus

Estonia

Poland

Russia

A battered one from Spain

The National Library of Belarus

Students will practice their writing by sending postcards to other people across the globe and US who have signed up for the project.  See http://www.postcrossing.com/about if you are curious for more details.

So do you have stamps or postcards you would like to donate to the effort?  Any denomination of stamp is helpful because we can mix and match to pay the international rate of $1.05 per card.  (Plus people like seeing the variety of US stamps)  When you're out and about at places that sell postcards, will you pick up a postcard  or two for our class to send? Or maybe you have a few from past adventures.

It is always a fun treat to get happy greetings and encouragement from people all over our globe.  We end up learning a few things about geography, as well.  The kids are excited to be a part of this unique experience.
